WHERE TO GET BOOKS |
 |
|
A surprising number of genealogical books and histories are
available for purchase--even those that were published more than a century ago, and have
gone out of print! In fact, many books are available on the Internet for downloading. Here
are some sources you might want to consider:
- United
States Internet Genealogical Society Books Online Collection
An outgrowth of David Blackwell's initial New England History and Genealogy
Free Books Online Effort. Links of interest include:
- Higginson Book Company
Specialing in genealogy and history Higginson Book Company (http://www.higginsonbooks.com) has over 10,000
genealogy and history titles, including a large number dedicated to single surnames,
cities and locales. It might take 6-8 weeks to fill your order (they create an
"edition of one," if necessary, by photocopying one of their out of print
"masters"), but it is well worth the wait! (Their prices are very competitive.)
- Powell's Books
"The largest new & used bookstore in the world," Powell's
Books is a good source of genealogical books, books by and about Whipples,
and any book you can't find somewhere else.
- New England Historic Genealogical
Society
Members of the New England Historic Genealogical Society can borrow books from the
Society's extensive library. (Visit their website to
join.) You can also purchase books (many of them "reprints of one") from the
Society. Though not as extensive as Higginson's titles, books sold by NEHGS (http://www.nehgs.org) are generally in stock, and can be
shipped quickly. Their toll-free sales phone number is 1-888-BY-NEHGS (296-3447). Sales
catalogs are available.
- Amazon.com.
A small number of books are available from Amazon.com--the earth's biggest bookstore. In
some cases, Amazon.com will ship them to you overnight.
