The gravestones of Captain John's fourth son, William, as well as William Junior and other family members, were removed from the family's burial plot in Limerock to here, the Moshassuck Cemetery--located about three miles north of Providence on Main Street. Phebe Dexter Whipple, wife of Arnold (page 17 in the Henry Whipple book), descendants of William and Benjamin Whipple, sons of Captain John, effected the removal and had this monument erected to honor their memory. Sprague and Salsbury were families into which the Whipples had married. Only four of Captain John and Sarah's children's headstones or monuments are extant.
