    • !SOURCE: William Wyman Fiske, "The Whipple Family of Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire: Proposed Ancestral Origin of Matthew Whipple of Bocking, Essex, and a Whipple Ancestral Line for Arthur Gary of Roxbury, Massachusetts," The Genealogist, Vol. 20, No. 2 (Fall 2006), p. 203. Gives name Margaret Whipple, stating that:
Matthew identifies only one sibling, the "wife of Richard Rathbone," in his will of 16 Dec. 1616. She is probably the Margareta Rathbone vidua bur. at Bocking 19 Jan 1627/8, the only Rathbone burial in that parish prior to 1628. It has been argued that the unnamed sister of Matthew Whipple was named Marion and that she and her husband Richard immigrated to New England. There appears to be no basis in fact for this assertion.

!SOURCE: "Genealogical Gleanings in England," The New-England Historical and Genealogical Register (October 1890) 44:389. Mentioned in brother Matthew's will as "my sister, wife of Richard Rathbone."

!SOURCE: Email from Blanche Greene Wichman to the Whipple Website, 5 Sep 2005. Casts doubt on suggestions that the Marion who was the sister of Matthew Whipple of Bocking, England, was the same Marion who married the Richard Rathbone that was the ancestor of the Block Island, Rhode Island, Rathbones. Blanche points out, for example, that:
      • The "Rathbone Family Organization" has identified a Richard Rathbone (son of William) who was born in Nov 1570 in Prescott, Lancashire, England (baptized 26 Nov 1570 in Farnworth Chapel there) and married a Marion Whipple in 1595. This Richard died 7 Nov 1623 and is buried at the Farnworth Chapel where he was baptized. Lancashire is located in northern England, far from Bocking where Matthew and his purported sister Marion lived. (Bocking is located in southeast England, in Essex county of East Anglia, east of London.)
      • "Dave Rathbun alerts us that the theory that Richard was the first in America was proven wrong decades ago. See the Rathbone Register for information about John of Ditton, Lancashire, who came in 1654. Additional resources have been provided by Robert Rathbun of the Rathbun Rathburn Rathbone Family Historian, who sent Descendants of William Rathbone in Rich Text Format."
Much research is needed to establish the identities of the (apparently) two Marion Whipples--in different parts of England--who married Richard Rathbone.
