St. John's Episcopal Church

This church steeple and clock are the successor to the original atop King's church--now St. John's Episcopal Church in Providence. Few individuals owned a watch or personal clock in early Providence; a primitive sundial was the nearest thing to a clock. Not until built, in 1722, did the town possess a communal timepiece. Joseph, Captain John's seventh son, was the major financial contributor toward his construction.
